Writing lyrics...

...is pain and pleasure entwined. When it works out it feels great, but when you struggle you feel like the shittiest, most talentless fuckhead in the world. I've experienced both of those feelings during these few nights, repeatedly, like a fucking roller coaster.

Well, inspiration/perspiration and all that jazz... I'll get back to my shit, we are starting with the lead vocals next Tuesday, I have the lyrics for 6 songs pretty much done, 5 to go.

  1. Hey Jani, when you create a song, what do you create first: the lyrics or the music?

    1. Do you have a rough idea about the lyrics in mind while you write the music or do you just write "free" music and later on see what kind of lyrics could match the song?
And second question: what kind of lyrics do you find more difficult to write, the ones for speedy songs or the emotional ballad ones?

    2. Great question, Im interested in hearing the answer as well. I have the same problem with my own writing. Write the music first and struggle to make lyrics/vocals fit like they should. If I write the lyrics first, then the music is usually cheesy.

  2. Not just writing lyrics... Everything works that way (for me at least).
But it's great that you've finished already! Until Tuesday we'll have good news about that :)

  3. Gathering the Faithful's got some best lines out there. You're definitely good at writing lyrics, so better make them worthwhile, don't give us procrastinated shit.

  4. Oh, yeah, I know the feeling...It comes again and again when you're into creative stuff and trying to get the best out of everything. When it comes to lyrics, I guess the music and the feelings you've had while writing it should bring a touch of inspiration. If that happens to fail, you could explore the struggle and frustration that you feel, as well as other themes that seem familiar to you at the moment. The emotional roller coaster can be a source of inspiration itself. "Gather The Faithful" was love-oriented. Songs about the dark corners of the soul will be very welcome. They have a greater impact too.

  5. I suck at lyrics. I've composed several songs that I'm proud of, but then never end up as complete songs because the lyrics I write are total shit. It's like I'm vomiting cheese.

  6. I hope some song will stay without lyrics. . Will be there any instrumental piece?

  7. Is it true (at least it is for me) that if you TRY to write great lyrics, it will usually fail. If you just go about your business, listen to some good music and have a pen and paper near by, lyrics start to flow faster than you can keep up. OR do you write lyrics while listening to the music you've written? Either way, cant wait to hear it!

    1. Hey Jani, what amp model are you using in the new CO recordings?
Ive got a JCM2000 TSL half stack that I've used for recording a few songs through an SM57 and im not happy with the tone. The guitar tone on your last album was GREAT!

    2. Dual Recto + recto cab oversized + sm57 im right plase = sound. but i think you need screamer too. like Maxon od820 (best imo) , tubescreamer ibanez or other pedal.
