Guitar shit:

So folks,

as a lot of people keep asking me about guitar playing, practicing and all that jazz, here's what I'll do: At some point in the near future I'll write a lengthier blog entry regarding all this guitar-crapola.

So, if you have any valid questions regarding the subject at hand, feel free to post them under the the comments in this post. I'll check them through and try to answer the ones I can in the near future, a week or so, give or take 3 years :)

  1. When you were first starting to practice seriously what did you practice? Did you practice exercises, scales, what? Also, did you read books and watched instructional videos or something? If yes, which? Would be interesting to know...One last question, did you ever skipped school only to practice guitar?

  2. That's awesome! Tell me, I read somewhere that you are "self taught", now, what does that mean? Did you like play random shit and just eventually learned or what?

OT: If you perhaps remember what amp settings you used in song Broken, would you be kind and share it with me?

  3. Hey Jani!! your guitar sound is a mystery, I wanna know what amps you use in Cain's Offering album, an what is your usual electric live rig.

    Keep Rocking !!!

    Greetings from Colombia

  4. Agree with Meolix. Would be good to know how you actually got so stupidly break-neck fucking awesome at guitar. I'd specifically like to know the amount of time you spent practising on a daily basis until you got kick ass.

Also, semi-related. But have you ever though of adding a bit of a "FAQ" page to this blog for all of these questions that keep reoccurring? Is that even possible?

    1. "FAQ" would be a good idea, but I have no idea how to do that, or if it is even possible here. If anyone knows feel free to tell me.

    2. I think the fastest way to do is to open a new post entitled "FAQ", where are all generic questions that are being asked everytime, assuming that the posts created by you, can be modified to add new questions. Is the best way that I could give now for a blogspot.

    3. Or you could create a new tab/interleaf named FAQ :) I think that would be a good idea, also used a lot by other bloggers :)

  5. Also, your romantic history with guitars? Which ones have you had affairs with? Which are you still together with? which ones did you let go of and why?

(it's common knowledge that you had a public separation with quite a few sexy-bitch axes after SA)

And another one: Have you ever thought about giving lessons, or sharing your music knowledge with others in other ways? (Books / DVD's / etc)

  6. Awesome! I seem to remember reading that you use Jazz III picks for your electric playing. I've been using these for a few years now but picked up a regular sized jim Dunlop Tortex one the other day and couldn't believe the sound difference! I thought the Tortex one gave a much better sound. What are your thoughts on this? Would you sacrific sound quality to use a pick that you feel more comfortable with?

    1. This is maybe the worst post to ask this. And I don't think that Jani has any twitter account. If you read carefully the account you'll see inmediatly that is a fake account.

    2. Nope, I don't have a twitter account.

  10. I'm the one who asked about the guitar tech in "It's saturday" post.

Wanted to ask about what did you do since you're young, practicing, scales, repeats, your self-study and all that, but it's actually in the first question, so I'll avoid it.

    - What I wanna know is actually or since you started, which scales are/was your favorites to play, which ones do you use now, and it/all them you still using for compose?

    - Picks (plektrum), you gave me in Barcelona 2006 a Jim dunlop jazz 3 if I'm not wrong. Are the ones you still use? The ones you always used? Why? Are small, maybe because is easier to do harmonics?

    - Height of guitar when playing. In older pictures from 99, 2000, I saw pictures where you had your guitar about the height of the chest, a bit below of the breasts, but with time, I've seen that you play the guitar at the height of the hips. Dunno why. Is for convenience? just another way to play it? more comfortable to play in the first frets?

    - Any tips for not novices, but nor experts to play?

    - How the hell can you play so damn fast and clean :D ?

    - About your guitars. I'm in love of your Ibanez USA Custom Streetwise, and I'd like to know if you are still playing it and why. What part is customized? (Not really in that subject, maybe I'm not doing well the question).

    - How many hours have you spent playing in a day? And, did you had anytime any muscle disease, in sinews, fingers or something due to uncountable hours playing? If yes, how did you manage it? I had years ago, and it's a fucking hell.

Last time I saw you (maaany years ago) I took the questions about your guitar tech to home, until now. About 6 years if I'm not wrong. Glad to do now :)! As you've been my favourite guitarist since years and still being, it's important to me that you offered yourself to do this, and of course, many thanks for taking your time to read and answer.

  11. Thanks Jani to listen us! I thought you'll never reply/see our messages... Anyways, I'm here for some techniques but I'll post them later if you want to help. I was only waiting for a reply. So... will you help me in some songs you played live with Sonata? - I want to cover Replica, The End of this Chapter and others.
    - Also how to practice alternate picking, I do scales but this doesn't help me to improve some fast solos. So I just "pick down" every single note.

    Cheers! :-)

    1. BTW! I almost forgot. The first fret from E string (1) is buzzing and I read that I might fix the height of the string from my Edge III (Ibanez). Any help?

    2. Last think: Which e-mail do you usually use, because I wrote you twice and you never replied, and I was nice :-(

    3. I can't really help with the SA songs, just pick them up by ear, they're really not that difficult :) Alternate picking is a matter of practice, I'll try and cover some of that in the post.

I'm not too great a guitar tech, should see the guitar to say anything. I suggest you just take it to a repairman/tech and let him/her fix it.

As per email, I don't really have a public email. There's one I used to register this blog, but I don't really check it that often.

    4. Thank you J-Li for the reply! Anyways I'm not experienced learning by ear, and really, I'm self-taught and I'm learning right now. Just one year of experience playing the guitar at the moment. I was asking for kind of stuff that I love how you play it and I'm glad to cover these songs. So here are my doubts: Here's the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk1JdgtrhGE&feature=related 43:23 - 43:47 (Hard by ear because of overdrive)44:13 - 44:23 (I think is like 6/6/4 in E B G respectively and then up up up down? That doesn't sound good in my guitar) and last 1:02:27 - 1:03:00 I MUST SAY THAT I LOVE THAT PART BECAUSE YOU PUT ALL YOUR FEELING! Really, I want to cover them. If I'm successful I'll devote them to you! ^^

      Cheers :-)

  12. Perhaps you could discuss the picking techniques you generally use. And of course everyone always likes to hear about guitars/amps/gear. If you want a more specific request, how the hell do you play the opening riff to Revontulet? My fingers don't like that one at all.

Thanks for taking the time to help all us guitar-nerds out! Very glad I got to see you play in Tampa, Florida back in 2006 before you left SA.

  13. Massive speed of your solos are killing me. Any suggestions? :) (Why the hell blogspot doesn't give a tab to edit your postes messages?)
