This would be funny if it wouldn't be so damn sad

That's sadly pretty much where the music industry is heading at the moment,
if it's not already there.

Well, time to get back to recording so people can have some more shit to download for free.

  1. Its Rly Sad :((( i just don't get this world why the people like you and Mr.T make their brains work hard to make some melody some music people are going to like and u expect the albums to sell and all when people are just spiting in that work by downloading for free ? :((

  2. Yea, Timo Tolkki wrote about it. He said that only the live shows can support the bands. If your album will be available on iTunes I'll buy it...

  3. I download extremely rarely anymore, I usually go bonkers if I don't find my favorite music available as a real CD, that's when I -might- download. Nothing beats that insane collection filling your shelves to the breaking point.

  4. Well, I would have never bought a CD if I hadn't listened to it somehow before. Downloads have also created the needing of playing shows and now we can see musicians. Now they play in every place they can instead of playing in the most important cities. That's good I guess. Yes, downloading for free is not, but sincerely I prefer listening to something for free and then buying it if it's worth that going to a music shop and buy some crap I won't like at all.

And it's not fair to buy a CD. 15-20 €? How much of that money are the musicians gonna get? Buying CD's is crap. They are going to become useless soon and they will only serve as collection items. I have rarely lsitened to the CDs I have because listening to the same downloaded music is much more comfortable. Buying digital songs seems much better: you can play them on your mp3 player and the musician obtains the benefits, not the recording company.

Now.. How many of you would be reading this blog if you had only listened to the music you bought?

  6. I usualy download first and if I like it, buy it then. Except if you are a really big big star dans can sell millions of copies, you won't be able to live of it. And I'm sure bands prefer having more peoples to their gigs where they get a way major per centage. Than selling few more copies but having problem to books your shows since people don't know you because they have to pays 20$ for an album they MIGHT like. But if you like a band of course support IT, it's the least you can do.

  7. Well, there is a good thing. Downloads have made the musicians tour again, and do it in many more places. Before it was only possible to see the bands in capitals or festivals, whereas now they tour in many more places.

I think it's much better to download something, listen to it and then buy it if it's worth. That's what I do. And anyway, buying CDs sucks. They are going to be useless soon and they are expensive, like 15 - 20 € here. How much of that money do the musicians receive and how much do the recording companies? Buying digital versions is much better. I've rarely played the CDs I have, they are a collection item. I just listen to the same downloaded music because it's much more comfortable. I can take my mp3 away and my music there.

And how many of you would be here if you had only listened to something you paid for? I wouldn't.

    1. I realize this is touchy subject and don't want to start a flame war on my own blog. That said, my kingdom, my rules. If you listen to an album on the internet and then decide to buy it because you like it or not to because it sucks that's fine. I don't think anyone has anything against that. If you just download (pirated version, there's also legal downloads) the album and enjoy the music never paying a dime for it then you're just ripping the artist off.

Saying that CDs are expensive is really lame excuse to download music for free. If you can't afford it then you don't get it, as simple as that. I would want to have a lamborghini. Just because they're expensive and I can't afford one doesn't mean I should get it for free, or does it?

In all fairness I think that the artists (and the labels, if one is involved) have every right to put any price tag they want on their product. If it's too much for someone, then that's too bad. You shouldn't get something for free just because you don't want to pay for it.

Might sound harsh, but that's just my 2cents on the subject. I've been working in this business for over 10 years now, I've seen and felt the decline in sales first hand.

  8. But downloads will make you gain money. If people didn't download things new bans would never have a chance of succeeding. There are too many of them. How many people would spend hundreds of euros in some music CDs they might like or not? Maybe somebody would buy a CD or two, never enough to try everything out there. (leaving rich people and fanatics apart)

Then if you like a band you'll go to their shows, you'll buy their music and/or you'll buy merchandise. That will mean benefits for the musicians. And that's possible because somehow someone could listen to their music. Think of every new band out there, unknown by most people. How will they have a chance to survive?

How much do you earn with each sold CD? Does it worth? Some people who don't make the music gain money with every single CD we buy, isn't it lame? Music could be cheaper if the benefits were for the musicians, and only for them. And CDs are lame. You can't play them in a mp3/mobile/Ipod/etc. Why not? I paid for the damn music, let me pass it to my mp3 player.

Correct me if I'm wrong, you surely know more about this than me. And this is not a flame war, we could learn something ^^

PS: From my point of view, comparing a Lamborghini with music is not the same. Do you have that life just because of the money?

    PS2: Damn spelling again =/

    1. "I paid for the damn music, let me pass it to my mp3 player".

I think that´s just what Jani meant: You paid for it so it´s OK to put it on your MP3 player.

Maybe you´ll have friends listen to it and I suppose that´s fine too. But it´s not fine to have your friends download their copy from you, since they don´t pay for it.

And as far as the comparison goes: what I think Jani meant to say, is that people shouldn´t have what they can´t afford. And that goes for music, cars, designer clothing and everything else. And I think these are wise words.

  10. It is similar to what I Peleus here; to defend my rights of author armo a battle that in the end I went to another place, do not agree with that my work falsifies, I am not a musician but I am writer and the fight for rights is given on a daily basis or if do not see you the face. Saying that music is on Cd face and therefore no purchases is not credible my question is how did it before, in case you not bought music... It is as if someone buy books of lurch by an eighth part of the original, are not you who are hurt are the ones who create the work….

  11. Mp3 files sounds like crap,So I buy the CDs even If I dont know If I will like it for exemple:I have ordered the new sonata arctica's album and I dont know If I will like it or not,if not,it will be just a part of my collection ^^ and if i really like a cd sometimes I will buy all the editions like I've done with gather the faithful,I wanted this bonus track so badly ! :P

  12. Totally agree with you, Jani. I hate the culture that's developed of "music should be free". I try to fight against it, when I can, but it's a bit like shouting into a hurricane... a few people hear, ignore you and then your words are just snatched clean away.

The only things I download at the moment are songs I cannot buy legit, and very, very few bonus tracks from territories other than my own. Though eventually I plan to buy those alternate versions as well, so that my collection is 100% clean.

    1. Just to clarify, by "cannot buy legit" I mean the songs aren't *available* for purchase, anywhere, not that "I can't buy it 'cause I don't have enough money ;(" Your Lambourghini argument is exactly right, funnily enough I've used the exact same line trying to persuade people. Nice choice of hypothetical car btw, I approve ;)

  13. For things that you, dear musicians, make us feel with your music... we must pay much more than a laborghini for each song.... thanks for your sounds... you help us every day... you can give us a breath when life is too much... you show us that in the shadows of sadness there is still light and when we are happy... you can make us feel much more euphoria!!! thanks... and I'm sorry, piraty is something that shouldn't exist. (sorry for my bad english too :S)

  14. Music is worth buying. I'm a musician myself, its a piece of art that has value. If people are truly music fans, they will buy the album. I have the whole Sonata CD Discography, the whole Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, Opeth CD discographies since they are all ma fav bands. Anything metal that Jani releases I will surely buy online with out listening to it first. He's a Guitar Hero, Just like John Petruci, Jeff Loomis, Marty Friedman, Matias Kupiainen, Chris Ammott, and so on.... The albums Silence and Winterhearts Guild are my personal favorites with Jani shredding. Janis guitar solo compositions have hooks, brilliant soloist, and rythm guitar player.
